At Kellenberg Memorial, basketball is more than a game. The coaching staff uses the sport to teach developing teenagers that the inclusive picture is bigger than wins and losses. The court is seen as an extension of the academic hallways where the Marianist Community instills a foundation of Civility, Order, and Respect (COR) to the student body. The program is founded on the COR philosophy while being centered around a family atmosphere. The goal for the basketball staff is to have players foster healthy relationships as teammates, develop into leaders of the school community, and compete to the best of their ability while demonstrating good sportsmanship. Throughout the years, Kellenberg has produced numerous NSCHSAA Player of the Year recipients and NSCHSAA All- League players. Recently, the program has competed in 3 NSCHSAA finals and has won 3 NSCHSAA regular season titles. The Boys Basketball program has also won the James Greene Sportsmanship Award 7 out of the past 9 years. This award is voted on by the Long Island District Board #41 which encompasses all the referees in Nassau County. Off of the basketball court, the team participates in Service of Self projects to help out where needed in the community. They also travel upstate to Kellenberg Memorial’s retreat house called Founders Hollow. During this retreat, the players enhance their relationship as teammates but more importantly continue to develop their Faith lives. The program works hard to be a good example of the Marianist Community and school as a whole. The players, who become alumni, come back annually to see their former coaches and inspire the young athletes. A Kellenberg basketball player will be fully prepared for the new challenges their next chapter brings in all aspects of their lives.
